(Vietnam Logistics Review) The most impressive event at the beginning of 2017 of Vietnam Logistics sector is the receiving in experiment of the world-largest container vessels at Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT), Ba Ria- Vung Tau. Margrethe Maersk with tonnage of 194,000 DWT and capacity of 18,000TEU anchored at CMIT, marking a new step of development of the maritime logistics sector of Vietnam.

Efforts…

In recent years, the Government has pushed up the implementation of the project of group 5 seaport- the most effectively operating one in the country. Seaport group 4 has been targeted to be an international gateway, a regional hub port, which will meet the need of development of Vietnam and international maritime transport and will attract parts of transshipment goods in the region. Cai Mep- Thi Vai port group should make good use of their geographical advantages to develop to a regional international gateway.

Robert Hambleton

CMIT General Director

With efforts, CMIT has gradually achieved assigned targets. The receiving of vessels of over 18,000TEU is a greater achievements to planned targets, opening an opportunity to make CMIT a regional transshipment center. Mr. Nguyen Van Cong- Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Transport- said:” Cai Mep- Thi Vai port group has the designed capacity of 7m TEU pa. However, in 2012, its capacity was only 4-5% of the designed capacity. In 2016, the cargo- through- port was 3.5m TEU. The navigation way was synchronously upgraded and is able to receive larger vessels to the port. In 2016, CMIT had import-export goods of 1,979,000 TEU (an increase of 48%), local transshipment goods reached 1.3m TEU, international transshipment goods reached 160,000 TEU; the number of vessels coming increased 75%... The receiving of the giant mother vessel is a bright spot in Vietnam maritime sector. CMIT has become one of the19 world-largest ports that is able to receive super vessels of over 18,000 TEU…

... to values of belief

Giving speech at the ceremony of receiving Margrethe Maersk, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha Giang- General Director of Maersk Line, Vietnam said: “Although it is an experiment, CMIT and the whole sector have had great efforts to have Margrethe Maersk safely anchored. In 1923, when Maersk ship first anchored at Vietnam, we did believe in the development of the country with more shipments of larger capacity… The current successful receiving of Margrethe Maesk is a proof not only of economic development but also an active upgrade of technology infrastructure upgrade… We thanked the Government and the Ministry of Transport, Vung Tau Port Administration, CMIT for upgrading necessary technology structures for the receiving of Maersk’s mother vessel this time…”

Giang also added, trade between Vietnam and Northern Europe has increased 35%. If there are more support from the Government in terms of policies, infrastructure, and technology upgrades… we can call for more frequent anchoring of super vessels, making the second largest Asia- Europe route in the future.

Margrethe Maersk is one of Tripple E. Maersk Line and the largest in Maersk Line’s fleet. It is able to transport 18,000TEU (20’’ container) with tonnage of 194,000DWT

In the past 5 years, trade between Vietnam and Northern Europe has had the increase of 35%. With the feasibility this time, Maersk Line believe Vietnam in general and CMIT in particular will receive more super giant vessels in the future.

Opportunities to be a regional transshipment center

Besides the successful experiment of the feasibility of receiving super transport vessel, the success to the maritime sector is not only a leap in the stage of development but also an opportunity to a regional transshipment center. Mr. Robert Hambleton- CMIT General Director- said: “The arrival of Margrethe Maersk is an important milestone for both CMIT and Vietnam maritime sector, for it proved that the terminal is able to serve as a regional transshipment center to goods in Southeast Asia, especially for trading routes of Vietnam- Northern Europe…”.

However, to achieve the target, Vietnam should be more determined in its course of comprehensive economic innovation. Moreover, there should be more synchronous in both road and waterway infrastructures, making good use of the role of being the gateway of Southeast Asia. At the event, Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Cong urged the Vietnam Maritime Administration to propose to the Ministry of Transport the project of dredging Thi Vai- Vung Tau navigation way from the current depth of -14m to -15.5m.

CMIT with the structure of the only deep-water port in Vietnam is able to have stevedoring ability for super transport vessels. The terminal is a J.V among Vietnam National Shipping Lines, Saigon port and APM Terminal- the Denmark’s world leading container terminal operator. After 5 years of operation, CMIT has become a container terminal of international level with growth in the following year higher than previous year. In 2015, operating capacity of CMIT increased 7 times, and the number of vessels of over 80,000 tons anchoring at CMIT increased 5 times, sales increased 3 times, compared to 2011. In 2016, CMIT’s operating capacity increased nearly 70%, sales increased 33% compared to 2015.

Maersk Line is the world largest container transport with trusted services and also a shipping liner worldwide. It has 324 representative offices at 115 countries, 7,600 crew, 22,400 land employees and 605 container vessels. Maersk Line is a part of Maersk Group, with Headquarter in Copenhagen, Denmark.

With modern port operating facilities, CMIT is able to provide high quality services to its customers and liners in the fast time by international direct routes from Vietnam to large markets in Asia, Europe and America. CMIT just received the aware of TOP 4 Asian Port Operators by Lloyd’s List in Singapore.

Current abilities, together with supports from the Government in policies, navigation ways, and infrastructures for liners promise a bright future for the regional "transshipment center”.
