Phnom Penh Express – A New Connectivity Network Between Cambodia and Vietnam
Managed by CMA CGM Inland Services (CCIS), the Phnom Penh Express barge service is designed to optimize supply chains and minimize transit times for cargo between the two countries. The first service departed from Gemalink Port in Cai Mep, one of Vietnam's largest ports, in which CMA CGM holds a 25% stake, heading towards Phnom Penh Autonomous Port (PPAP).
This new barge route ensures seamless connections for import and export cargo to and from the United States and expands links to global destinations through CMA CGM’s extensive service network. Weekly, three long-haul services – JAX, SUEZ, and PEX3 – call at Gemalink, enabling customers to easily access major markets such as North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia.
Esra Bora, Managing Director of CMA CGM Vietnam, remarked, “The Phnom Penh Express is a clear testament to the strength of CMA CGM’s integrated ecosystem, leveraging Gemalink’s infrastructure, a global transportation network, and end-to-end logistics solutions.”
Commitment to Sustainable Logistics and Advanced Solutions
Beyond enhancing its transportation network, CMA CGM is focused on building sustainable logistics solutions. Previously, the Group announced the e-Barge project, a fully electric barge system in Vietnam powered by renewable energy from a solar farm located at Gemalink Port. This significant step demonstrates the Group’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly logistics practices.
GIL’s solutions not only enhance reliability but also improve transparency and precision in the logistics chain. This enables customers to forecast and optimize production planning, significantly reducing downtime and operational costs.”
Since 1989, CMA CGM has operated in Vietnam with a robust network of offices in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Hai Phong, Da Nang, and Quy Nhon, employing over 200 staff. Through its 29 main services across seven ports, the Group reinforces its leadership in connecting Vietnam to international markets.
The Phnom Penh Express not only meets the growing demand for transportation between Cambodia and Vietnam but also reflects CMA CGM’s strategic vision for modern, sustainable, and efficient logistics solutions. By fully utilizing existing infrastructure and green initiatives, the Group underscores its commitment to driving sustainable economic growth while enhancing service quality for customers.
Together with the e-Barge project and its global connectivity network, CMA CGM is not only strengthening its presence in Southeast Asia but also making a vital contribution to the global trend of green and efficient transportation. This is an essential path forward as the global logistics industry undergoes significant transformation.
