On the evening of October 17, May 7 Square in Dien Bien Phu Ward became a lively gathering place as the Dien Bien International Trade Fair 2026 officially opened. Organized by the provincial People’s Committee in coordination with the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency, the fair carries the theme “Dien Bien - A Gateway for Trade, Reaching International Markets.” Delegations from Laos and China joined Vietnamese officials, businesses, cooperatives, residents and visitors, giving the opening ceremony a distinctly cross-border character.

According to official provincial information, the fair runs from October 17 to 22 and features 230 booths representing enterprises and producers from several Vietnamese localities as well as Laos and China. Agricultural produce, locally certified OCOP products, handicrafts, processed foods and consumer goods collectively showcase the range of goods seeking access to wider markets. Beyond retail transactions, the fair gives manufacturers and cooperatives a place to meet distributors, exchange information and build longer-term relationships.
From exhibition booths to regional partnerships
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Lo Van Cuong, Standing Vice Chairman of the Dien Bien Provincial People’s Committee and head of the fair organizing committee, highlighted the role of trade promotion in stimulating demand, expanding markets and establishing lasting production and sales partnerships. He also identified border trade, import-export activities and logistics services as important prospects. The province expects such connections to support services growth, local livelihoods, tourism promotion and broader investment cooperation.

Dien Bien’s geographical position is particularly valuable because it borders both Laos and China. The province’s investment introduction documents report a natural area exceeding 9,548 square kilometres, more than 455 kilometres of international borders and a population comprising 19 ethnic groups. Its location brings economic opportunities together with exceptional historical, cultural and ecological resources. Stronger engagement with Yunnan and Luang Prabang offers a pathway for exchanging goods, welcoming tourists and developing partnerships across neighbouring markets.
Images from the opening demonstrate how economic diplomacy also works through practical encounters. Officials and business representatives visited booths, talked with exhibitors and explored products and market prospects. Such exchanges matter not only to major investors but also to smaller businesses and cooperatives that need distribution partners, greater visibility and opportunities to join supply chains. A trade fair becomes most valuable when relationships continue after its stalls close.

Connecting investment promotion with projects and infrastructure
The next major event is the 2026 International Investment Promotion Conference among Dien Bien, Yunnan and Luang Prabang, scheduled for the morning of October 19 at the event centre of the Muong Thanh Grand Dien Bien Phu Hotel. Provincial preparatory information indicates an expected attendance of approximately 950 delegates and accompanying participants. The conference theme, “Dien Bien – Gateway for Trade, Convergence of Investment Opportunities,” places the province’s development ambitions within a broader framework of cooperation among neighbouring localities.
The official conference script updated on October 18 outlines keynote remarks, presentations on the province’s investment potential, contributions from domestic and overseas delegates, and planned business networking and cooperation activities. Complementary field visits are designed around three areas: industrial parks and logistics; tourism, services and resorts; and agriculture, livestock and food processing. Linking dialogue with site visits gives investors opportunities to examine land, infrastructure, raw materials and potential operating conditions rather than relying only on promotional material.
A particularly concrete development is Decision No. 2339/QD-UBND, dated October 17, 2026, approving both the investment policy and the investors for the Thanh An Industrial Park infrastructure project. Covering 104.60 hectares, the project carries an approved total investment of VND 841.29 billion. The investor consortium consists of Hoa Phu Joint Stock Company, Hieu Phat Investment and Construction Joint Stock Company, and An Thinh Cuong Foods Company Limited. Its phased schedule anticipates completion in the fourth quarter of 2028. The decision signals progress in preparing an industrial production base that can support the province’s investment outreach.

New momentum for trade, tourism and supply chains
Alongside industrial investment, documents prepared for the October 19 conference point to efforts to connect Dien Bien with established economic centres elsewhere in Vietnam. A proposed memorandum between the provincial government and the Ho Chi Minh City Industrial Park Enterprises Association covers investment promotion, trade, tourism and workforce development. It envisages connecting manufacturers, distributors and logistics providers, promoting local goods, supporting site visits and building workforce skills. Subject to signing and subsequent implementation, these initiatives could extend the province’s commercial relationships to southern Vietnam’s industrial and service networks.
For a border province with strengths in agriculture, heritage tourism, ecological attractions and cultural diversity, supply-chain development goes far beyond moving merchandise from one location to another. Local specialty products require quality assurance, packaging, traceability, warehousing and distribution to compete in new markets. Tourism destinations require cooperation among travel companies, transport providers, hotels and local services. Stronger links across these activities can help more enterprises, cooperatives and households participate in economic growth.

Visitors examining regional specialties and handmade products at the fair offer a vivid reminder that international commerce begins with direct human connections. Trust, consistent quality and continued engagement make it possible for initial conversations to develop into working relationships. Digital promotion and online channels can further help local producers reach customers beyond the fairground. Those opportunities complement the province’s efforts to promote investment and attract partners across borders.
The development strategy reflected in Dien Bien’s October events is notably coordinated: showcase marketable products, introduce investment sites, bring decision-makers together and engage international partners within one programme. It demonstrates a proactive and welcoming approach to making the most of a culturally distinctive border region. From the vibrant fair opening on October 17 to the anticipated conference on October 19, Dien Bien is sending a consistent message: it welcomes partners willing to build opportunities together, deepen trade links and contribute to sustainable socio-economic development.
