(VLR) Human resource of high quality will be a premise for enterprises’ developments in the integration, and helps Vietnam’s logistics service overcome existing difficulties for sustainable developments, which also contributes in Vietnam’s economic development and affirms Vietnam’s regional and international position.

Vietnam needs over 2 million of logistics laborers

In recent years, together with developments of sectors in the economy, Vietnam logistics service has had significants steps of developments and great growth potentials.

According to Logistics Performance Index (LPI) 2018 announced by the World Bank, Vietnam ranked 36/160 countries having been surveyed, an increase of 25 levels compared to the 2016 ranking (64/160)- A result from appropriate policies and strategies by the Government and ceaseless efforts from enterprises and training organization of Vietnam’s logistics service sector.

According to Vietnam’s Logistics Report by the Ministry of Industry Trade, needs for logistics human resources from all levels in logistics enterprises and manufacturing enterprises may reach 2.2m in 2030. Current providing abilitiy for logistics human resource only reaches 10% of it.

The Government has paid attention to training of logistics human resource, which can be seen in series of policies having been issued. Significantly, the Decision no.200/QD-TTg by the Prime Minister set out 6 groups of tasks, including the tasks of “training, improving awareness and quality of human resource” focusing on logistics training of university: improving both in terms of quantity and quality of teachers teaching logistics and connecting Vietnam’s logistics training organizations to foreign training ones. And the Circular 24/2017/TT-BGDDT dated October 10th, 2017 issuing education training list of level IV- university level- with code for logistics training.

Logistics sector “hotter” than ever

Logistics is currently one of 12 groups prioritized by the ASEAN economic community to support development, in order to strengthen connectivity and build common competitiveness. This poses the urgency in improving the quality of human resources.

Beside majors as Medical, Information Technology, Foreign languages as English, Korean, major in logistics and supply chain has been getting more interesting to students. The major has high entrance score.

Enrollment season this year - 2020, marked a remarkable development in the training of logistics human resource at university level, when many universities had extremely high entrance scores for the logistics discipline.

The National Economics University enrolled in Logistics and Supply Chain Management with an entrance score of 28 points. That is, each candidate student must achieve an average of more than 9 points per subject in order to enter this discipline. This is also the discipline with the highest standards of the school.

Ranked second was the University of Economy of HCMC, the Logistics and Supply Chain Management had the entrance score of 27.25- the highest in the school; ranked third was the University of Technique (National University of HCMC) with the entrance score of 27.25.

According to Associate Professor, PhD Ho Thi Thu Hoa - Director of Vietnam Logistics Institute (VLI), when choosing the subject, students should work seriously from the time in college- a necessary thing for better job in the future. Students should improve their language ability, especially English. English skills bring great advantages to their study progress and their job in the future. Students can accumulate knowledges from foreign countries, have opportunity to work in foreign companies with better job promotion.

The schools also deploy all training systems at the same time from mass training programs to high quality, advanced or international association taught entirely in English. This is considered a positive move of the schools to partly meet the urgent demand of the market for logistics manpower, gradually solving the problem of lack of logistics manpower that the industry is facing.

To provide qualified human resource for the logistics sectors, training schools should have innovation to the training schedule in the direction of equipping their students skills from basic levels to advanced ones; at the same time, they should have cooperation with enteprises for proper adjustments in training contents; giving opportunities for students and recruiters to meet for better enterprises’ recruitments.

Today a logistics service provider is able to provide various service packages from warehouses to warehouses through a synchronous system of providing materials serving production to warehousing- to transport, domestics forwarding and import-export. Therefore, in the training of logistics service and supply chain, students need to be equipped with knowledge and skills related to these contents.

Lacking and wea labor source which is unable to met development needs of the labor market and trend of developments causes difficulties to developments of Vietnam’s logistics. It is believed that the fact logistics is focused and then put into formal training at universities will meet the needs of the service sector in the future- the sector with a scale of over USD 22bn, accounting for over 20% GDP of the country with an annual growth rate of 20% - 25%.
