(VLR) While challenges and opportunities have been intricately interwoven in the economy, Gemadept is known as a successful enterprise of sustainable business development, especially in the field of port operation and logistics service. With more than 20 years of experience, Gemadept is a leading brand in the logistics sector. Vietnam Logistics Review had an interview with Mr Pham Hong Hai – Manager of Gemadept Logistics about the unit’s business operation.

Vietnam Logistics Review had an interview with Mr Pham Hong Hai – Manager of Gemadept Logistics about the unit’s business operation.

Although the economy still faces many difficulties, Gemadept has maintained a significant growth. Which kind of Gemadept’s businesses contributes the most to the overall growth?

During the hard time of the economy, Gemadept still achieved remarkable results. The profitable Port Operation continued to contribute the most to the overall growth, followed by the Logistics and then the Real Estate with good profits

Please let us know that what is the most important factor helping Gemadept to overcome difficulties and currently have a sustainable development?

In the prolonged period of economic crisis and recession, Gemadept has stood firmly, overcame challenges and maintained sustainable development. This remarkable achievement was the result of various comprehensive strategies and policies, particularly: Giving priority to the core businesses including Port Operation and Logistics; investing in feasible projects which can bring stable returns and profits; temporarily suspending projects which require large capital but cannot bring immediate results due to the decrease of cargo volume, promptly divesting of inefficient business activities; transferring some real estate property and office building; selectively investing in business activities with long-term plans and low expenses. Evaluating and monitoring comprehensive cost reduction for each business activities.

Gemadept is a successful enterprise, how can Gemadept compete with other giant corporations who are occupying the market?

Gemadept Corporation has given top priority to the development of core businesses including Logistics and Port Operation in order to improve the management ability as well as operation capacity to satisfy the needs and requirements of customers. In particular: Investing in modern Logistics Centers in key economic zones in Vietnam; investing in the light truck fleet to meet the needs of goods distribution from distribution centers to various agencies, distributors, supermarkets and consumers; improving the ability of company management, supply chain management, applying modern and latest warehouse management software to manage cargo in all Distribution Centers and cargo transport (WMS, TMS, RF- barcode). Recruiting professional specialist in supply chain management; organizing training courses lectured by Logistics Academies inside and outside the country as well as specialists of the company for all staffs.

Please tell us business Plans being executed by Gemadept in the coming future?

Regarding the Port Operation (River Port, Sea Port and ICD), Gemadept has completed construction and put into operation Nam Hai Dinh Vu Port in Hai Phong City in early 2014. With 450m berth and -12m draft, the Port is able to accommodate 30,000 DWT container vessels. Besides, the Port is designed and equipped with 2 modern Gantry Cranes and 2 more Tulcan shore cranes. This is currently the most modern port which is able for accommodation of container vessels of largest capacity in Hai Phong. From the first to the third quarter of 2014, Gemadept will complete the construction works to upgrade Dung Quat Port up to 70,000 DWT. Gemadept Dung Quat Port will be the port with highest capacity in the Central Vietnam, which is able for calls of bulk cargo vessels, equipment vessels and container vessels.

Regarding the 3PL services, Gemadept will carry on with the deployment of long term plans to unceasingly enhance competitiveness and the ability to provide services meeting stringent requirements of customers of various fields of industry such as FMCG, Food and Beverage, E-goods, Home-furnishing, etc. Besides, new Logistics centers will be developed in the South, North and Center of Vietnam.

What has Gemadept prepared to be the pioneer in the economy opened to global market?

Since the early 1990s, Gemadept has been one of the leading companies in the marine industry, being the marine agency, shipping agency and forwarding agency for more than 15 leading Main Line Operators, container vessels and Logistics companies when they participated in the Vietnam market. This has provided Gemadept with sources of capital, knowledge and human resources to gradually become a big corporation owning a system of port stretching from the North to the South, and large Logistics Centers in key economic zones of Vietnam.
