(VLR) To meet the needs of improving loading and unloading efficiency, exploiting full design of 1.5 million TEUs of phase 1 from Y2022 at the Gemalink port, Gemadept - CMA CGM recently signed a contract with Doosan Vina to order two additional supergiant ship-to-shore (STS) cranes to equip for this Vietnam’s largest capacity port.

Gemalink is located in the Cai Mep - Thi Vai port cluster (in BRVT province) with 2.5 million TEU and is divided into two phases. Phase 1 has been completed and just put into operation and welcomed the first cargo vessel in January 2021. Currently, the port has been equipped with six STS cranes (supplied by Doosan Vina in 2020), eighteen RTG cranes and will soon be added two more STS cranes to serve for Phase 1.

Two supergiant and modern STS cranes signed have similar specifications to the six cranes that Doosan Vina supplied in November 2020. Each crane is 93m high, 150m long, 27m wide and weighs more than 1,700 tons. It can reach up to 70 meters into the sea (equivalent to 24+2 rows of containers) and can lift the project cargo of 65 tons from large mother vessels up to 200,000 DWT. These cranes are full package supplied by Doosan Vina from design, fabrication, erection, delivery, and transferring technology.

During an inspection visit at the Gemalink port on March 20, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked leaders of BRVT province and ports located in the Cai Mep - Thi Vai, including Gemalink, must put the effort to develop and complete the Cai Mep - Thi Vai port system, especially the connection between Cai Mep and Cai Mep Ha into a logistics complex, improve operational efficiency, ensure integrated services, promote growth and contribution of the port to the national Gross Domestic Product.

Doosan Vina's General Director Jeong Young Chil said, “I’m very happy as achieving the contract to supply two more STS cranes for the Gemalink Port. Not only because this contract brings profit to the company but also because it contributes to promoting the growth of the port logistics following to the direction and objectives of the Vietnamese Prime Minister. It also proves the skills and technical qualifications of the Vietnamese employees at Doosan Vina. They truly mature in engineering and technology after a period of learning from the company's Korean experts. They will be the owners of Doosan Vina in the future and I believe that they will make a positive contribution to the development of Vietnam's mechanical engineering and heavy industries sector”.

It can be seen that Doosan Vina has been on the right track and the direction of the Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on the development of the port logistics industry as focusing on the domestic market. Up to now, Doosan Vina has provided a number of cranes for loading and unloading containers at domestic ports such as Saigon New Port (02 RTGs), Da Nang Port (2 RTGs), Nghi Son 2 Petrochemical Refinery Port (02 STS) and Gemalink Port (6 STS + 2). These cranes are the powerful arms of the Logistics industry.

“In the coming time, Doosan Vina hopes to have more opportunities to contribute strongly to the promotion of the logistics industry by supplying more cranes to the seaports. The supply of 8 STS cranes to Vietnam's largest international port, Gemalink, has proven our quality and capacity. So, I hope that the Vietnamese seaports’ controllers will give us opportunities when there is a need. We will satisfy all your requirements”, Doosan Vina's CEO added.
