On 1 January 2026, the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) started imposing carbon charges on high-emission imports such as steel, cement, aluminium, fertilizers, electricity and hydrogen, following a transitional reporting phase from 2023–2025.
