Half a Century: From Challenges to Achievements
The ASEAN Ports Association was established in 1974 during a period when Southeast Asian nations faced significant challenges. Port infrastructure was limited, and economies relied heavily on agriculture and traditional industries, making the region’s contribution to global trade modest. However, over the years, with APA’s support and collaboration, ports in the region have made remarkable improvements, significantly boosting the ASEAN economy. Today, ASEAN has risen as a “manufacturing-export powerhouse,” with a combined GDP of around USD 3.8 trillion.
APA has played a vital role in strengthening the strategic position of Southeast Asian ports within the global supply chain. Trade volume through ASEAN ports has seen exceptional growth, facilitating market connections between Asia, Europe, and the Americas. ASEAN is now considered one of the world’s most dynamic regions, with a substantial increase in maritime traffic due to the strong linkages and close cooperation among APA members.
Commitment to Digitization, Greening, and Social Responsibility
During the 50th-anniversary celebration, Colonel Bui Van Quy, APA President and Deputy General Director of Saigon Newport Corporation, highlighted the association’s goals for the coming years, APA will focus on major objectives: advancing technology and AI, mitigating climate change, promoting sustainable development, and enhancing social responsibility.
- Digitization and Technology Development: APA is committed to promoting digitalization in port management, building a “Maritime Single Window” system to optimize maritime procedures, and investing in smart port technology to improve operational efficiency.
- Greening and Sustainable Development: Given the increasing complexity of climate change, APA aims to minimize environmental impact and develop green solutions. Reducing emissions and working towards Net Zero by 2050 is a key strategic goal of the association.
- Social Responsibility and Harmonized Development: APA emphasizes not only port development but also responsibility towards communities and society. Achieving a harmonious balance among ports, logistics, and the environment is essential for ASEAN to secure its position on the global stage.
Welcoming New Members and Expanding Partnerships
One of the highlights of this conference was the process of admitting Laos, the final ASEAN country yet to join, as the 10th member. This step marks a major milestone, symbolizing comprehensive cooperation and integration of all ASEAN countries in the port sector. Laos’ membership will create new opportunities for collaboration and drive development across the region.
Additionally, APA is expanding its international partnerships beyond member states to include major global partners. Initiatives in inter-regional collaboration, experience sharing, and investment will provide a foundation for ASEAN ports to keep pace with global trends, fostering a sustainable port ecosystem.
APA – Uniting for a Sustainable Future
Over 50 years, APA has become a symbol of unity and effective cooperation in Southeast Asia. More than just a port association, APA is an alliance that prioritizes sustainable, green, and advanced values. APA’s journey underscores the vital role ports play in the ASEAN economy and reflects the long-term vision of its member nations.
Looking to the future, with a forward-looking vision and clear development objectives, APA will continue to elevate the position of ASEAN ports in the global supply chain. The focus on digitalization, emission reduction, and green development will be foundational for member countries, not only enhancing port infrastructure but also meeting the rigorous demands of a green and circular economy. The motto “Together We Navigate – Forever Sustainable” is not only a call to action but also the aspiration of the entire region, aiming to build a sustainable and prosperous ASEAN.
With solidarity and cooperation among countries, APA is sure to continue affirming its role as a driver of sustainable development, maintaining the importance of ASEAN ports in the regional and global economy.
