BSR’s first commercial shipment of B5 biodiesel from the Dung Quat Oil Refinery marks an important transition from research and trial blending to market deployment of a lower-carbon fuel. As Vietnam expands its biofuel ecosystem and energy-transition agenda, B5 adds a new product to BSR’s portfolio while creating room to decarbonize diesel transport and raise the value generated by the domestic refining chain.

From Laboratory Trials to the First Commercial Batch

BSR has researched, assessed and trial-blended mineral diesel with B100 biodiesel to produce B5 and B10. The blended fuels were found to meet technical requirements under TCVN 5689:2024 and QCVN 01:2022/BKHCN. The first commercial B5 shipment therefore represents more than an isolated trial: it reflects preparation across process technology, quality control, storage, blending and product-management procedures at the Dung Quat Oil Refinery.

B5 is a blend of conventional mineral diesel and B100 biodiesel, with the renewable component accounting for approximately 5%. This ratio allows the fuel to use existing diesel-engine and distribution infrastructure while gradually substituting a share of fossil fuel with renewable content. For refiners, the challenge extends beyond blending to oxidation stability, water content, contaminants, storage performance and compatibility throughout the logistics chain.

BSR’s quality-control platform is strengthened by its Dung Quat laboratory, which is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 with a scope covering E10, B5, B10 and sustainable aviation fuel. This allows the company to test and verify product quality on site, reduce external testing time and improve confidence as new fuels move from development to commercial use.

A New Link in the Green-Fuel Ecosystem

B5 arrives as BSR accelerates the shift of its product portfolio toward sustainability. Alongside E10 bio-gasoline, the company has developed sustainable aviation fuel, sustainable marine fuel, B5/B10 biodiesel and higher-value petrochemical products. The direction suggests that Dung Quat is gradually evolving from a conventional refinery into a more diversified production platform capable of responding to decarbonization trends.

Unlike E10, which is being rolled out under a nationwide blending roadmap, bio-diesel blending is not currently mandatory across Vietnam. Existing policy encourages organizations and businesses to produce, blend, trade and use B5 and B10. BSR’s decision to bring B5 to market is therefore a pioneering step that can generate practical data on product quality, demand, logistics, pricing and customer acceptance before the market scales further.

From a supply-chain perspective, commercial B5 requires a stable and traceable B100 supply that meets sustainability standards. Depending on technology and specifications, biodiesel can be derived from vegetable oils, animal fats or used cooking oil. A well-organized domestic collection, processing and supply chain could support the circular economy, reduce fossil-fuel dependence and create a new market for Vietnam’s biofuel industry.

From One B5 Shipment to a Long-Term Transition Strategy

For B5 to move beyond initial commercial scale, economics will be decisive. B100 prices, transport costs, blending scale, tax treatment and market acceptance will directly affect competitiveness against conventional diesel. Alongside technology, a clear policy framework is needed to encourage investment in feedstocks, tanks, blending systems and distribution networks.

Feedstock must also be addressed strategically. Heavy dependence on imported B100 would limit benefits for energy security and domestic value creation. By contrast, developing local feedstock chains - particularly from residues, used cooking oil or other suitable biological sources - could connect energy with agriculture, processing industries and the circular economy, provided economic viability, traceability and lifecycle-emissions criteria are maintained.

For BSR, commercializing B5 is also a test of its ability to organize markets for a new generation of fuels. Its internationally accredited quality-control system and experience with E10, SAF and sustainable marine fuel are helping the company accumulate capabilities in certification, traceability, logistics and commercialization - capabilities required for deeper participation in regional low-carbon fuel markets.

Over the longer term, competitive advantage will come not only from refining volume but also from the ability to offer a diversified portfolio with lower carbon intensity. B5/B10, E10, SAF and sustainable marine fuels can serve as complementary components in a phased transition aligned with Vietnam’s technology and market conditions. Each new product expands growth options while preparing BSR for increasingly stringent environmental standards.

The first B5 biodiesel shipment from the Dung Quat Oil Refinery therefore carries significance beyond a single transaction. It signals that BSR’s product-greening agenda is moving from research to market and from commitments to execution. If the B100 supply chain is developed sustainably, market mechanisms are strengthened and quality remains consistent, B5 can become another important link in Vietnam’s clean-fuel ecosystem, supporting emissions reduction, energy self-reliance and higher value creation in the domestic refining industry.
