Optimizing Supply Chains: A Foundation for Bilateral Economic Development

On November 1, 2024, in Shanghai, the Saigon Newport Corporation (SNP), along with the Shanghai Port Federation and the Vietnamese Business Association in China, held a significant conference to promote optimized supply chains and strengthen trade between Vietnam and China. The event brought together numerous senior representatives from both countries, including Mr. Nguyen The Tung, Vietnam’s Consul General in Shanghai; Mr. Zhang Jie, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Trade Commission; Colonel Nguyen Nang Toan, Chairman of SNP; and Mr. Lu Cheng, Director of the Asia-Pacific Port Research Center. Over 150 delegates from Chinese shipping lines, logistics companies, and customers also participated, underscoring the scope and importance of the event.

In recent years, trade between Vietnam and China has made substantial strides. China is now Vietnam’s largest trading partner, while Vietnam ranks as China’s fourth-largest trading partner and holds the highest trade share among ASEAN nations. Bilateral trade now accounts for about 25% of China’s total trade with the ASEAN region. This conference further reinforces the shared goal of enhancing supply chain capacity between the two nations, facilitating easier market access for businesses, and reducing trade barriers.

During the conference, delegates engaged in in-depth discussions on the importance of optimizing supply chains to increase the effectiveness of economic cooperation. Proposed solutions included expanding port infrastructure, advancing digital technology applications, and shifting toward intelligent logistics models to meet the demands of an increasingly volatile global economy. SNP representatives emphasized that with more than 55% of Vietnam’s import-export container market share handled through SNP ports, Vietnam plays a vital role in linking supply chains and continually strives to align with the needs of international partners.

The partnership between SNP and major Chinese shipping lines such as Cosco, SITC, CU Lines, and Shanghai Jinjiang has shown significant effectiveness in connecting regional supply chains. Moreover, Vietnamese and Chinese businesses agree that developing green solutions, including energy optimization and carbon emission reductions, is essential to boosting competitiveness in the face of climate change and increasingly stringent environmental standards. The conference also provided an opportunity for both sides to share experiences in green logistics, seek innovations, and improve technologies to build a more efficient, sustainable supply chain that meets modern market demands.

The Vietnam-China Supply Chain Optimization and Trade Promotion Conference in Shanghai concluded with promising prospects. The event served as a valuable opportunity for businesses from both countries to meet, exchange ideas, and collaborate, paving the way for building a modern, sustainable supply chain adaptable to global economic fluctuations. The agreements and commitments achieved at the conference underscore that both Vietnam and China recognize the essential role of bilateral trade in economic development and share a commitment to pursuing sustainable, environmentally friendly values.

Enhancing trade not only brings economic benefits but also lays a foundation for a strong, comprehensive relationship between the two nations in the future.
