(VLR) On February 16, 2025, Tan Cang - Cai Mep International Terminal (TCIT) reaffirmed its crucial role in the global supply chain by welcoming the first vessel of the PEARL service, operated independently by MSC—the world’s largest shipping line. This milestone event occurred just one week after TCIT received the ZSL/PELICAN service, marking a significant advancement in expanding Vietnam’s maritime transport network to international markets.

A New Milestone in International Maritime Connectivity

Currently, MSC operates nine direct shipping services from Vietnam, with TCIT officially receiving two key routes:

  • ZSL/PELICAN Service: An optimized shipping corridor from Vietnam to the U.S. Gulf Coast, minimizing transshipment, improving delivery time, and enhancing transportation efficiency.
  • PEARL Service: Directly connecting TCIT to the U.S. West Coast via major ports such as Long Beach and Oakland. This service plays a crucial role in helping Vietnamese businesses gain faster and more efficient access to this strategic market.

Notably, the first vessel of the PEARL service, GREENVILLE, docked at TCIT with a deadweight of 74,000 tons, a length of 272 meters, and a capacity of up to 8,010 TEUs. This vessel is part of MSC’s fleet of eight mother ships, each capable of carrying between 8,000 and 12,000 TEUs.

Strategic Benefits for Export-Import Businesses

The PEARL and ZSL/PELICAN services not only provide significant advantages for MSC and TCIT but also create favorable conditions for Vietnam’s export-import businesses. By enabling direct connections to key markets like the U.S., these services significantly reduce shipping time and logistics costs while enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods on the global stage.

Additionally, TCIT is more than just a crucial transshipment hub; it is also closely integrated with an extensive inland container depot (ICD) and logistics system in Vietnam’s southern economic region, including:

  • Tan Cang - Long Binh ICD
  • Tan Cang - Song Than ICD
  • Tan Cang - Nhon Trach ICD

This network strengthens the connection between industrial zones, manufacturing centers, and port systems, optimizing cargo flow, reducing storage time, and increasing supply chain flexibility.

Beyond expanding maritime transport services, TCIT aims to develop comprehensive logistics solutions. Investments in new depots and ICDs in the Cai Mep area and surrounding regions will enable the port to provide high-value-added services, meeting the evolving demands of shipping lines and export-import enterprises.

Elevating Vietnam’s Position in the Global Supply Chain

Joining MSC’s global shipping network not only allows TCIT to expand partnerships with major shipping lines but also enhances Vietnam’s position in the global supply chain. With direct connections to over 1,900 ports worldwide without transshipment, MSC is creating an efficient transport network that enables Vietnamese goods to reach international markets more swiftly.

Currently, TCIT operates 10 weekly international shipping services, directly connecting Vietnam with key markets such as North America, Europe, and Intra-Asia. This strengthens TCIT’s competitive advantage while fostering sustainable growth in Vietnam’s logistics industry.

TCIT’s continuous reception of new shipping services and its close collaboration with MSC reflect a strong commitment to developing a modern maritime transport system that meets the increasing demands of export-import businesses. Amidst an increasingly competitive global trade landscape, this progress will help Vietnam maintain its critical role in the international supply chain, contributing to economic growth and strengthening the country’s standing on the global logistics map.
